Alemu Tafesse recently published a highly profound article - The Ethiopian Muslim Civil Rights Movement: Implications for Democracy in Ethiopia. In it, he argued that the 14-month old Muslim civil rights movement has had remarkable implications for the democratic transformation of that country. He specifically argued that by forcing the government to completely throw away its democratic garb; by introducing into modern Ethiopia an alternative path to democracy, and by actually becoming an alternative location of democracy, the Muslims' activism has so far left great impacts on the contours of the current and future democratic possibilities of Ethiopia. While I generally agree with the points he raised, I also believe that they need to be discussed and debated by all Ethiopians at large. |

Open Letter to World Bank, Stop Financing Displacement and Killing
I am from Ethiopia and worked in Ethiopia from 1980 to 1985 in the
lower Awash Valley irrigation project. In fact I did my masters on how
to grow Maize in that part of Ethiopia where people can feed
themselves. The cash crop cotton the communist regime cultivated never
improved the life of the Afar people.
In the same token the dictatorship in Ethiopia is displacing indigenous people in Western part of Ethiopia in Gambella and Beni Shanguel and sold more than 3 million hectares of land for foreigners to produce food for their own people. Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Nations claim securing land to feed their people for future. More than 70,000 Annuaks have already been forced from their land and another 150,000 will be displaced in the coming few years.
All this displacement is financed by World Bank. The Ethiopian tribal junta can not do this displacement without the support of USA/UK financing it at all levels including paying salary for those who are chasing the people from their traditional land. Annuaks are now an endangered species. Unfortunately, those who went to visit their homeland did not escape death.
The killing of Omot Ojulu Odol a 33 year old Ethiopian American from Gambella on March 2, 2013 with other five people including 11 year old child is to silence the Annuak people. The USA Ambassador in Ethiopia might try to buy the claim made by the tribal regime of Ethiopia that Omot Ojulu Odol is a “terrorist” and ignore his death as such. The USA forensic team will surely will do its job to tell us the circumstance of his death. It was Search to Kill to terrorize the people of Gambella and “guarantee security” and “safety” for foreign land buyers and tribal Land Lords from the Diaspora!
The regime propagandists are putting the driver license of Omot on their websites to celebrate his death. The Annuaks have been killed and terrorized for more than a decade now. Thousands were killed to clear their land to make money for the tribal regime in Ethiopia. For that mission it bought few Annuaks from the region. The good thing is many brave Annuaks abandon the regime to tell the true story of what has been happening in Gambella.
The Police Chief of Gambella is now in jail for condemning the killing of six Innocent people. If world bank has a courage it should send its representative and talk to the police chief jailed in Gambella. The young Annuaks are targeted for saying No to Taking Away of their land. If World bank denied loan for Cambodia in Summer of 2011 for displacing its people why should it be different for Ethiopia in 2013 ?
The Human Rights Watch is just asking that for the Bank to do its internal investigation. People are displaced and are dying, the World Bank is responsible for all that because it is paying for those who are doing this dirty job. The Annuaks have no choice but fight to defend their livelihood from homegrown and foreign vultures.

Obama “Moonwalking” Human Rights in Africa?
Following the presidential election in late December 2007 and the
Kenya Electoral Commission’s hurried declaration of incumbent President
Mwai Kibaki as the winner, supporters of opposition presidential
candidate Raila Odinga in the Orange Democratic Movement alleged
widespread electoral fraud and irregularities. For nearly two months
following that election, ethnic violence and strife in Kenya raged
resulting in more than 1200 deaths, 3,500 injuries, and the displacement
of over 350,000 persons and destruction of over 100,000 properties.
The great American poet Walt Whitman said, “Either define the moment or the moment will define you.” Will the election of Uhuru Kenyatta as president of Kenya define President Barack Obama in Africa or will President Barack Obama use the election of President Kenyatta to define his human rights policy in Africa?

FBI foils murder plot on journalist Abebe Gellaw Ethiomedia Updated January 9, 2013 BOSTON, Massachusetts (Ethiomedia) - The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has foiled a murder plot on award-winning journalist Abebe Gellaw. The Ethiopian Satellite TV (ESAT) said on Tuesday the suspects were under FBI investigation. Goosh Abera (ጉዕሽ አበራ), who is staying in the US after seeking a political asylum and yet is an alleged spy for the TPLF ruling party in Ethiopia, was cited in the ESAT report as ring leader of a group of four in the assassination attempt on the life of one of Ethiopia's most prominent journalists based in the US. The assassination was to be carried out when Abebe Gellaw would have travelled to Boston, MA, last December for an ESAT fund-raising event. Boston FBI spokesman Greg Comcowich said he wouldn't go into details but noted that the FBI takes such type of crimes seriously, and called on Ethiopians in the US to report to local FBI Bureaus whenever they spot spies who work for foreign governments. Dr Gregory Stanton, president of Genocide Watch and a staunch human rights defender well acquainted with the conditions in Ethiopia, said TPLF's attempt to commit a crime in the United States was a matter of serious concern that should lead to recognizing the organization as terrorist. The FBI has secured messages that the alleged assassins were exchanging to carry out the murder. The Historic Act: May 18, 2012 Abebe Gellaw, an award-winning journalist on May 18 struck Prime Minister Meles Zenawi like a lightning by raining down deafening chants that condemned the long time dictator. Once struck, Meles drooped his head over his slumped body at a high-level Symposium on Global Agriculture and Food Security opened by none other than US President Barack Obama. Obama had left but senior US officials, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, were there when Abebe committed the act at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C. The heroic act triggered an immediate celebration within the Ethiopian Diaspora on the one hand, and anger and resentment in the Meles Camp whose security agents made death threats against Abebe Gellaw. Meles was ironically lecturing about food security when Abebe, the independent satellite TV (ESAT) program host and producer, brought the sky crushing down on Meles, telling the startled audience "Freedom before food!" Abebe chanted many times with a defeaning voice: "Meles Zenawi is a dictator! Free Eskinder Nega! Free Political Prisoners! Food is nothing without freedom! Meles has committed crimes against humanity! We Need freedom! Freedom! Freedom!" His voice was so powerful everyone followed the brief scene with utter surprise and silence. Meles has never been humiliated from such proximity as he lives surrounded by an army of gun-totting security guards that keep civilians at bay. "By humiliating Meles with such patriotic act," one analyst said, " I think Abebe has broken the ice, and more acts of patriotism would haunt the dictator till his final days in power." Abebe was escorted away by police officers he described as very respectful and understanding. But a nearby Meles security guard threatened Abebe, "We will kill you!" Abebe told police that one of the security guards of Meles had threatened him with death. An act reserved only for the hero, Abebe's action speaks volumes about the political repression and frustration that has engulfed Ethiopia for over two decades.
